Common UTI symptoms can include:

  • Frequent urges to urinate

  • Feeling a burning sensation when urinating

  • Cloudy, bloody, or strange-smelling urine

  • Pain in the pelvic or abdominal area

How is a UTI treated?

Antibiotics are the most effective treatment method and work by killing the bacteria that is causing the infection.

Is a certain gender more likely to get a UTI?

Yes, women are at higher risk of developing a urinary tract infection than men. This is believed to be due to having a shorter urethra than men, so it is easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.

Is there any way to prevent a UTI?

Preventative measures are:

  • For women, ensuring always to wipe front to back after urinating. This method ensures that bacteria from the rectum does not gain access to the urethra.
  • Practicing good sexual hygiene. This includes urinating immediately after intercourse and frequent washing of the genitals.
  • Staying hydrated
  • Drinking cranberry juice
  • Consuming probiotics
  • Maintaining high levels of vitamin C

Are there any other factors which increase risk of getting a UTI?

Yes, these include:

  • Individuals who suffer from conditions which obstruct the urinary tract, such as kidney stones, or that prevent the bladder from completely emptying
  • Women who have been through the menopause. This results in an estrogen decrease which increases the chances of a UTI
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Higher sexual activity or having a new sexual partner
  • Certain birth control methods

How do I prepare for my online appointment?

To ensure the physician can provide an accurate medication prescription during your appointment you can help by noting down any concerns and answers in advance, along with any allergies they should be aware of.

What will my online UTI appointment be like?

Appointments usually take between five to thirty minutes depending on the individual need. The online doctor will ask for a description of your symptoms. This will allow them to determine the best course of treatment. If necessary, they may recommend a follow-up appointment or a visit to a physical clinic.
